Scenes from the Hat

Issue 3: March-April 2024

Welcome to Scenes from the Hat, a bimonthly newsletter that highlights local theater news, updates, and featurettes on many of the talented people who make up the Greater Lynchburg Theater Community.

Is it spring yet? After 245 days of January, theaters hit the ground running in February with tons of rehearsals and performanes. We have been busy at the Foundation as well, much of which you can read about in the next section. In this issue, we feature one of our biggest supporters and marketing opportunity for theaters, plus an interview with a beloved music director that a lot of you have either worked with or at least heard of. We also explore a theater that's celebrating its tenth anniversary this season. So check out what we've got for you in this edition of Scenes from the Hat!

Director's Grant Award

What's New With Us

We have been particularly busy these past two months, and we know the theaters have been as well (did you see the February performance calendar??).  First order of business was for our committee to review the applications to determine a recipient for the third Director's Grant award. We had quite a few applications and it was a tough decision to narrow down just one winner. In the end, Libby Gatzke received the Director's Grant of $1,000.00 for her upcoming production of Winnie the Pooh: Kanga Rules, opening in late April at Commerce Street Theatre. Libby's application emphasized the need for quality costumes for the adults playing the various characters in the Hundred Acre Wood, specifically costumes that would last from year to year. For those who may recall, the Winnie the Pooh productions are the same shows that were performed at the old Lynchburg Fine Arts Center, written by the incomparable Jim Myers. Stay tuned for our next issue where we are going to look into Myers' impact and legacy on the theater community.

Radio 434: TheMIKEShow & Theatre Thursday

In March 2022, Mark Foreman had a chance meeting with Mike McKendree, owner and manager of a new streaming radio option for Lynchburg and the surrounding areas. Mark's initial goal was to explore different ways for theaters to market themselves; instead, this turned into a fortuitous partnership that lasted the brief but rewarding last few months of Mark's life. Mike and Mark hit it off instantly and developed a segment devoted entirely to local theater news. But we are getting ahead of ourselves...

Each issue of Scenes From the Hat will feature a theater and exploring the theater's beginnings, evolution over the years, and goals for the future - plus some fun facts along the way. A little southwest of Lynchburg lies the tiny town of Brookneal, Virginia. Nestled in Campbell County, Brookneal is also on the border of Halifax County and nearby Charlotte County. This rural area is an idyllic setting with sweeping views of the Virginia countryside. At first glance, one may pass through Brookneal as a conduit between more populated cities. But right in the heart of town lies a hidden gem: 246 The Main, Brookneal's very own community theater. It's easy to find - the address is 246 Main Street!

Spotlight

Each issue of Scenes From the Hat will interview a local actor/actress, director, set designer , or crew member. This is a chance for you  know some of these icons of the Lynchburg theatre community who you may have seen on stage or watched shows they were involved in backstage or directed. This issue's spotlight: Troy Mearkle This issue's spotlight: Denis Deane This interview with Denis was conducted on November 5, 2023. He had already been diagnosed with cancer, yet was in great spirits as he laughed and gleefully recollected his theatrical career. Sadly, Denis passed away on December 13, 2023. The many years of experience and wisdom he passed on will be an enduring legacy that we hope you find valuable and enjoyable. It is our honor to present this final interview with Denis Deane - a leader, a teacher, a creator, and a dear friend.
