Scenes from the Hat

Issue 5: July-August 2024

Welcome to Scenes from the Hat, a bimonthly newsletter that highlights local theater news, updates, and featurettes on many of the talented people who make up the Greater Lynchburg Theater Community.

Summer is here and with it comes the heat! We have some real troupers in our theatre community with so many outdoor shows. Wolfbane's Spamalot!, Endstation's Twelfth Night, and Poplar Forest's 1776 have all worked hard in this heat wave to bring excellent theatre in unique locations in the Lynchburg and the surrounding areas.  Despite the temperature, audiences have been coming out and enjoying summer evenings of theatre and music - on behalf of the Foundation, thank you for your continued support and patronage in these weather conditions.

Sit back in your (hopefully) air conditioned surroundings and enjoy the latest edition of Scenes from the Hat.

What's New With Us

We've got something new for our community. You can now get your very own printed theatre calendar! Each calendar will have all the community theatre performance schedules for the upcoming four months. These calendars will be updated throughout the year for your convenience so you can plan your weekends and know what's coming up on one convenient flyer. But there's a catch: in order to grab your calendar, you have to go see a show at one of our local theatres! We have so many productions being produced around the area this summer, so there are plenty of opportunities to get your calendar. As always, you can still see an extensive listing of upcoming events on our Events page where you'll find the a theatre performance calendar, an educational theatre performance calendar, and upcoming audition dates.

Ten Years of Poplar Forest's 1776

Before Hamilton took the world by storm with its contemporary approach to history, another playwright took a similar approach to a landmark event. 1776 is the musical dramatization of the signing of the Declaration of Independence. With a book by Peter Stone and music by Sherman Edwards, this show is filled with jaunty tunes and riveting dialogue that creates a thrilling experience for audiences (yes, history can be thrilling). The show is remarkably sophisticated, showing conflicting philosophies among the early colonies and how these politicians managed to come together despite seemingly insurmountable odds. Most importantly, the show manages to not place these men on pedestals. Melora Kordos, one of the prior directors of Poplar Forest's 1776 , explains, "[The show] doesn't deify the founders of the first Continential Congress. It gloriously displays  all that characters' faults as well as their strengths."

Each issue of Scenes From the Hat will feature a theater and exploring the theater's beginnings, evolution over the years, and goals for the future - plus some fun facts along the way. For this issue, we are going to one of the most unique theatre spaces in Lynchburg. Right in the heart of downtown Lynchburg resides Commerce Street Theatre, the first black box performing space in this community. A black box theatre is typically a square room with seating around the performance floor. This creates a simple and intimate theatre experience for both the actors and audience members, allowing for versatile staging arrangements and a variety of shows.
